Social media without likes: why aazmao removed them

· By Usama Ghazi · 2 min read

Social media without likes exists, and aazmao is built that way on purpose. On aazmao nobody can see how many likes or followers you have, so you post work you are proud of instead of content that performs.

Why remove likes at all?

A like count turns every post into a scoreboard. Before you share anything, you start guessing how it will do. Over time you post less of what you care about and more of what the numbers reward.

For people who are learning a skill, that pressure hurts the most. A first sketch, a first website or a first clay pot will never beat a viral video. When the score is public, beginners stop posting. On aazmao we want beginners to post the most.

What happens instead of likes?

People can still show appreciation. On aazmao you can send a Thanks to a post, or tell the maker you tried it yourself. Those are signals of help and effort, not a popularity score.

You also grow in ways that mean something:

  • Ranks that you earn by posting Makes, answering Asks and finishing Challenges
  • Stamps for real milestones you reach
  • Avatar items that show your effort over time

None of these can be bought. There is no store, no paid boost and no tipping. If you have a rank, you earned it.

Do follower counts disappear too?

Yes. On aazmao you add Skillmates, people whose work you want to see. There is no follower number to chase, and your profile shows what you made, not how popular you are.

This also changes who you follow. Without a big number to chase, people follow because the work is useful or inspiring, not because an account is famous.

Is a feed without likes boring?

It is calmer, not boring. Your daily aazmao Deck is built from Makes, Asks and Challenges by people building real skills, with a progress bar so you always know where you are. Unanswered questions are pushed up so nobody's Ask sits alone.

Most people find they read posts more closely when they are not counting hearts. Comments get longer and more helpful. Questions get real answers.

Who is this for?

aazmao is for anyone 16 and older who wants to share skills without performing for an audience:

  1. Students who want to show progress without being judged on looks
  2. Makers and hobbyists who want feedback on their craft
  3. Freelancers who want proof of work without building a personal brand
  4. Shy people who have something good to show and never posted it
